Scarce Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Bird-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "HAXSTUN & CO. / FORT EDWARD, N.Y.", circa 1875, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, the front decorated with a slip-trailed design of a bird perched in the crook of tall tree stump with heavily-shaded interior. Stylized ground cover at base. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Includes fitting salt-glazed lid, probably not original to the churn. An unusual design , exhibiting strong color. A 6 1/2" crack from rim. A 1" glazed-over surface chip to left side of churn. Rim chips, primarily to interior of rim. Heavy chipping to inner rim where lid rests. Lid in excellent condition.
