Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Chicken Pecking Corn Decoration, Stamped "WEST TROY, / N.Y. / POTTERY", circa 1880, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a full-bodied chicken atop a stylized ground. Cobalt highlighted to maker's mark and capacity mark. A thin crack extending entirely around base, including two hairlines, which extend a few inches up reverse, and a short crack extending onto underside. A 3" crack from rim on left side of front and a 3" hairline from rim on reverse. A small chip to interior of rim. Spots of staining to right side of crock's front. An iron ping to shoulder on right side of crock's front.
