Outstanding and Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug with Stenciled Federal Shield Design, Stamped "J.C. WAELDE / NORTH BAY", New York State origin, circa 1860, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with an elaborate stenciled design of a Federal shield flanked by flags and surmounted by a cross. Slip-trailed wavy line and dot designs to the left and right. Crossed slip-trailed foliate design below. Slip-trailed number 2 with underscores at shoulder. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. A striking example,which employs stenciled, slip-trailed, and brushed cobalt application. Excellent, essentially as-made condition.
