Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher, Incised "J F Winship / Norwich", Joseph F. Winship, Norwich, CT, circa 1845, ovoid pitcher with footed base and tooled rim molding, incised in script across the spout and body, "J J Winship / Norwich". Impressed with a number 3 below. The potter, Joseph F. Winship, and this pitcher, are briefly discussed in Lura Woodside Watkins' book Early New England Potters and Their Wares. Much of his career was spent at the pottery of Sidney Risely in Norwich. Professionally-restored handle. Two converging restored cracks from rim on right side of pitcher, measuring 10" and 7", suggest that a large wedge-shaped section of the pitcher was reglued and restored. Additional restoration where the cracks meet the rim. A minor in-the-firing base chip. H 14 1/4".
