Spot-Decorated Stoneware Spaniel Doorstop, Midwestern origin, circa 1885, molded in the form of a seated spaniel with impressed elliptical eyes and incised details to nose and mouth, the entire surface profusely-decorated with bold Albany slip spots. The heavy spotted treatment infuses this spaniel with a strong folk art presence. A long thin crack extending from left side of spaniel upward to top of head and descending from top of head to right side of spaniel. An additional, long Y-shaped hairline, extending horizontally near base on reverse. It is unclear whether this damage was incurred during or after the firing. H 7 1/2".
