Outstanding Large-Sized Stoneware Lion Plaque, probably Midwestern origin, fourth quarter 19th century, in the form of a reclining lion with deep relief molding to mane and incised details to paws, tail, and face, the exterior surface covered in reddish-brown over black paint. Black and white painted details to face, paws, and tail. Incised "2D" on reverse. Likely made as a mantle or doorway decoration. Exceptional size and strong folk art presence. Excellent condition with typical light paint wear and old varnish to painted surface. L 20" ; H 10 5/8".
