Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.", circa 1885, cylindrical jug with tooled spout and applied handle, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a crested pheasant with long tail and turned head, perched on a stump. Striped shading to left side of stump and stylized ground cover below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Some bubbling to cobalt slip. A large, 2 1/2" x 1 1/4" flake to base on reverse. A minor spout chip. Staining to surface. A small iron ping at base on front.
