Scarce Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug with Stenciled Eagle Design, Stenciled "A.P. Donaghho / Fredericktown, Pa." and "Excelsior Pottery," circa 1870, ovoid jug with tooled spout and applied handle, featuring the scarce, early Fredericktown, PA maker's stenciling of Alexander P. Donaghho, before his long-standing Parkersburg, West Virginia operation was established. Body of jug with large, stenciled Federal eagle, holding a banner with desirable inscription, "Excelsior Pottery". A fine example of Donaghho stoneware. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in the Southeastern U.S. A 1" spout chip on reverse. A slightly-recessed spot on left side of jug. Two darker in-the-firing spots to front.
