Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Slip-Trailed Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "BROWN BROTHER , / HUNTINGTON, / L.I.," New York State origin, circa 1870-1885, cylindrical jug with tapered spout, decorated with a slip-trailed looping line design flanked by leafy flourishes. Unusual decoration for this maker. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. Literature: Pictured on p. 44 of USEFUL ART: LONG ISLAND POTTERY, Cynthia Arps Corbett, Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, 1985. Restored spout chip. A tight vertical crack to midsection on side of jug, measuring approximately 8". Additional tight surface lines or hairlines.
