Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, nicely-decorated with classic Cowden spitting tulips flanking the spout and a finely-brushed design of two connected tulips on the reverse. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, base of spout, handle terminals on reverse, and applied "ears". An excellent example of a highly-prized Central PA form, surviving in remarkable condition.
