Exceptional Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Tulip and Impressed Asterisk Decorations, Manhattan, NY origin, early 19th century, ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with a very large incised design of a tulip flanked by leaves. Blossom and leaves embellished with unusual impressed broken circle designs, surrounded by meticulously brushed cobalt. Cobalt highlight to lower handle terminal. Tulip decorations are unusual for Manhattan stoneware, and the addition of impressed designs is unusual. A visually- striking example. A filled and colored 1 3/4" chip on side of spout.
