Rare Southern Stoneware Pitcher, Inscribed "N E Smith / 1924," Norman E. Smith, Lawley, AL, 1924, tankard-form pitcher with footed base and applied handle, the surface covered in an Albany slip glaze and incised with the potter's signature and date, "N E Smith / 1924". This pitcher was used by Norman Smith as a doorstop for many years, as the bottom was lost during the firing. Provenance: Previously used at the home of potter, Norman E. Smith, and purchased after his death in 1990. Bottom of pitcher lost during the firing. The interior of rim with an in-the-firing chip and associated small in-the-firing line. H 8 3/4".
