Exceptional Large-Sized Stoneware Face Jug with Humorous Inscription, Signed "Steven Abee / Lenoir, NC," North Carolina origin, skillfully-potted, ovoid jug with two handles and tooled shoulder, the front featuring a large applied face with incised accents and wavy mouth. Nose of face was lost prior to firing, which allowed the potter to add the humorous incised inscriptions, "OUCH! / OUCH! / OUCH! / THAT HURT! / HAY STEVE YOU BROKE MY NOSE!". Surface covered in a dark alkaline glaze. Reverse incised with the signature "Steven Abee / Lenoir, N.C.". Excellent size with unusual, folky inscriptions. Firing cracks to underside / base. Otherwise excellent condition. H 19 1/2".
