Scarce Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "D. ROBERTS / UTICA," New York State origin, circa 1827-1830, large-sized, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a stylized brushed design resembling a pear flanked by leaves. Additional cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Impressed under one handle "V" for five gallons. Difficult-to-find mark in an impressive size. Flaking to surface. Crack in collar on front. Some faint surface lines on left side / reverse of jar, probably in-the-firing. Additional, more noticeable in-the-firing surface lines on reverse. Rim chips. Some traces of old red paint.
