Rare Ovoid Stoneware Jug with Incised Bird Decoration, Stamped "H. & G. NASH. / UTICA," New York State origin, circa 1830, approximately two-to-three-gallon jug with highly ovoid form and semi-rounded spout, featuring an finely-incised design of a ringed neck bird with heavily-detailed body, perched on a large leaf. Additional smaller leaf designs to the left and right of the bird. Cobalt highlights throughout decoration and to maker's mark. Wonderful form, unusual maker's mark, and excellent figural design. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased twenty or thirty years ago in the New York State area. 3 1/2" x 2" filled area on underside. Two large, approximately 8" x 5" to 6" sections on left side / reverse of jug appear to be reglued. An additional crack extends to area to right of handle. An additional, short T-shaped line at base.
