Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Grapes Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed cluster of eight grapes hanging from a branch with leaf and corkscrewing vine. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased twenty or thirty years ago in the New York State area. Chipping to rim. Wear to inner rim. Some light wear to handles and surface of jar. Large, tight star-shaped crack on reverse, which is difficult to see and measures approximately 6" in diameter.
