Rare Monumental Ten-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1835, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and flared rim, lavishly-decorated on both sides with a brushed horizontal tulip design underscored by swags. Incised into the collar with a large "10", indicating ten gallons. Exceptional size, wonderful form, and strong decoration. The only ten-gallon Baltimore jar of this style we have seen. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor in 1977. Both handles professionally-restored. Crazing throughout much of interior and exterior of jar, presumably in-the-firing. Shallow chip on top of rim. H 18" ; Diameter (across top) 12".
