Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "JAMES HAMILTON & CO / GREENSBORO, Pa.," circa 1870, cylindrical jar with incised banding around midsection, tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated at the shoulder with a large fuchsia vine design between thickly-brushed stripes. Midsection with bold-faced James Hamilton maker's stenciling, above additional stripes and a highly unusual freehand "4" with outline, flanked by dashes. A wonderfully-decorated example. It would be difficult to add more decoration to the front of this jar. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a forty-year Southern U.S. collection. Excellent condition with a small base chip and two in-the-firing contact marks at base.
