Scarce and Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "G.A. & J.E. McCARTHEY / MAYSVILLE, KY," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring the stenciled advertising "G.A. & J.E. McCARTHEY / MAYSVILLE, KY.". Lavish freehand brushwork throughout, including three large tulips with curved stems, stripes and rows of spots, wavy lines flanking the stenciled advertising, as well as a script "3" with dashes and stripe at base. One of the more elaborately-decoated examples of Kentucky advertising stoneware to come to auction in recent years. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a forty-year Southern U.S. collection. Damage to end of one handle. Approximately 4 1/2" section of smooth chips on bottom edge of front, which occurred in-the-firing.
