Scarce and Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "G.A & J.E. McCARTHEY / MAYSVILLE, KY," circa 1875, ovoid jug with tooled spout and ribbed handle, featuring stenciled advertising for "G.A & J.E. McCARTHEY / MAYSVILLE, KY." Excellent freehand work throughout, including wavy lines flanking the stenciled words, vining above, a script "2" with dashes below, and three long stripes at the base. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a forty-year Southern U.S. collection. Excellent condition with a glazed-over base chip on reverse and light wear to the second line of stenciling.
