Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird on Flower Decoration, Stamped "CHARLESTOWN," Massachusetts origin, circa 1840, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, lug handles, and tall collar with semi-rounded rim, decorated with an artistic design of a long-tailed bird perched on a flowering stem. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. 3" horizontal Y-shaped surface line below maker's mark, not visible on interior. Reverse of rim slumped during firing. 1 1/2" line from rim on reverse. 3/4" in-the-firing separation on interior of rim on reverse. Minor 7/8" surface line at base on side of jar.
