One-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid pail with tubular pouring spout, handle at base and clay ears with wire handle. Front decorated with unusual fan-shaped floral motifs flanking the spout. Base of spout surrounded by a wreath. Reverse with double-stemmed tulip motif. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in Pennsylvania. Chip to handle at base. Filled and colored chip to one ear. Smaller filled and colored chip to opposite ear. Filled chips to tip of spout. A minor filled chip to rim. A tiny nick to rim and shoulder molding. Missing wooden piece to handle.
