Exceptional Twenty-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Cobalt Eagle Decoration, Stenciled "JAS. HAMILTON & CO. / GREENSBORO, PA" and "J. HAMILTON & CO. / GREENSBORO / PA," circa 1875, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large stenciled design of a Federal eagle holding a banner, inscribed "JAS. HAMILTON & CO.". Midsection decorated with opposing stenciled floral designs resembling cornucopias. Bottom half of crock stenciled "J. HAMILTON & CO. / GREENSBORO / PA", flanked by stenciled roses, decorated with additional stenciled flourishes throughout. Freehand stripes at rim, midsection, and base. Large stenciled "20" at base. Unusual wavy line incised on underside. Jar includes 19th century wooden lid. An outstanding example with rare double signature and desirable eagle motif. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a Mid-Atlantic antiques collection. Excellent condition with a base chip on reverse.
