Extremely Rare Salt-Glazed Stoneware Bird Whistle, probably PA or Ohio origin, 19th century, hand-modeled figure of a bird on circular base, the bird with applied ball eyes and incised feather detail to neck and tail. Surface covered in a mottled brownish Albany slip and light salt glaze. This form is most commonly known in Southeastern Pennsylvania redware, and is considered very rare in stoneware. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from an eighty-year private collection. Excellent condition with some small chips to underside near edge. L 4 3/8” ; H 3 3/4”.
