Very Rare Half-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. SWANK & CO. / JOHNSTOWN, PA," circa 1870, ovoid pitcher with tall flaring collar, nicely-tooled rim, and heavily-ribbed strap handle, the front decorated with a brushed sweeping vine bearing three tulip blossoms. Sides of collar decorated with vertical vine decoration and spout flanked by swags. Cobalt daub at upper handle terminal and stylized flower surrounding lower handle terminal. Midsection impressed with scarce "J. SWANK & CO. / JOHNSTOWN, PA" maker's mark. Signed Swank stoneware of this form and small size are considered highly unusual. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently discovered in Pennsylvania. Professional restoration to spout and 2" x 1 3/4" area to left of spout. Some fry to cobalt. H 8 5/8".
