Scarce Stoneware Spittoon with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "STANDISH & WRIGHT," Taunton, MA, circa 1850, with footed base, rounded rim, and carved semi-circular opening at shoulder, the body decorated with four brushed cobalt tulips. Impressed on one side with the cobalt-highlighted maker's mark "STANDISH & WRIGHT / 5". The impressed five probably refers to a specific size of spittoon produced by this potting firm. It does not denote five gallons. Excellent condition with a 2 1/2" diagonal hairline extending from lower right corner of carved opening on shoulder. H 4 1/2" ; Diameter 10 1/2".
