Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Folky Cobalt Bird Decoration, Midwestern origin, second half 19th century, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a bird with outstretched leg and spotted breast. Slip-trailed "5" below rim. Small chip to one handle. Very large poorly-restored Y-shaped crack on reverse, which extends onto front. This same crack extends onto underside, where it is covered with maroon paint, and then up front of churn to base of decoration. An additional short poorly-colored line extending up base of churn. Restored chips on interior of rim.
