Exceptional Five-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird on Stump Decoration, Stamped "E. & L.P. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1870, large-sized cylindrical jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with a finely slip-trailed design of a bird with long tail and crest, perched on a heavily-detailed stump flanked by shrubs. Outstanding decoration on an unusually large-sized jug for this maker. Professional restoration to surface of base extending up the jug's front, presumably thin cracks or hairlines. A long thin, unrestored Y-shaped crack on underside. 2 1/2" T-shaped hairline on bottom half of stump.
