Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stenciled "FOELL & ALT / EAST BIRMINGHAM / PA," circa 1860, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a finely-brushed vine design bearing three tulip blossoms. Foell & Alt stenciling at midsection. Base with freehand "3" flanked by dashes and underscored by a stripe. Impressed "3" at shoulder. Very nice condition with only minor flaws. One handle with a small chip and tiny nick. Opposite handle with a small chip. Two small base chips on reverse. Some wear on interior of rim. A small, shallow chip on top of rim, which appears to have occurred during the firing. A 1 1/2" salt drip at base of jar. Two salt drips to underside. Some sticky residue to surface.
