Scarce Stoneware Jar with Cobalt "Deer Hoof" Decoration, attributed to G. & A. Black, Somerfield, PA, circa 1865, approximately one-half-gallon, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and squared rim, decorated around the shoulder with nine boldly-brushed "deer hoof" designs. An unusually elaborate example of classic Black decoration. Numerous tiny chips to rim. Three short lines to rim area. Additional surface lines, probably in-the-firing, visible on interior only. Chip to underside at edge. A few other tiny base nicks. H 8".
