Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Butter Crock with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. SWANK & CO. / JOHNSTOWN, PA," circa 1870, short cylindrical crock with semi-squared rim and applied tab handles, decorated on the front and back with a sweeping cobalt tulip extending from leafy stem. Handle terminals with leaf-like cobalt accents. Brushed cobalt "1" below one handle. Impressed Swank maker's mark below opposite handle. Professionally-restored, large inverted Y-shaped crack extending from rim, with one branch extending several inches across base and onto underside and the other branch extending onto underside. Some small chips and nicks to rim. A minor chip to one handle.
