Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "A.O. WHITTEMORE / HAVANA, N.Y.," circa 1870, beehive-form cooler with large knob-shaped finial, octagonal bung hole, and applied lug handles, the front decorated with an abstract slip-trailed floral design featuring a spiraling circular blossom surrounded by vines. Highly unusual form. Significant flaked area on side of cooler, measuring approximately 6 3/4" x 6", which has been stabilized with a clear liquid substance. Some additional flakes on reverse and underside. A tiny chip to bottom edge of bunghole. Salt drip at base on reverse.
