Extremely Rare Staunton, VA Stoneware Advertising Pitcher, Western PA origin, circa 1875, semi-ovoid pitcher with tall, flaring collar and ribbed handle, featuring the stenciled cobalt advertising on the reverse "I.H. PLECKER / STAUNTON, VA". Stenciled arrow below name and stenciled leaves at base. Front with light, abstracting stenciling. A particularly rare example of Western Pennsylvania or Southern Shenandoah Valley stoneware. This recent discovery is the only stenciled Staunton pitcher we have seen. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, consigned from West Virginia. Rim chips. Two chips and surface wear to raised areas of handle. Some light wear to surface. H 9 1/8".
