Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "WELLS & RICHARDS," Reading, PA, circa 1845, ovoid jar with tall flaring collar and applied lug handles, decorated with two large tulips extending from leafy stems connected at the base. Reverse decorated with alternating upswept and downward hanging swags. WELLS & RICHARDS maker's mark impressed below the rim. An elusive and early central Pennsylvania maker's mark. Some chipping to rim. Areas of fry to cobalt. 6 1/4" and 4 1/4" hairlines from rim on front. An additional 3 1/2" minor line to front and a minor line to base. Some minor chipping to base.
