Scarce Half-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J.M. HICKERSON / STRASBURG, VA," circa 1880, nicely-potted pitcher with flared base tall collar and applied strap handle, decorated on the front with a brushed cobalt hanging flower flanked by swags. Opposing swags brushed around the collar as well as dashes along the spout. Impressed below rim with an inverted maker's mark of Shenandoah Valley potter, James Hickerson. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, consigned from Minnesota. Restored chips to base. Sealed and colored line extending up from base diagonally on reverse side of pitcher to base of collar. In-the-firing stone ping to spout. H 10".
