Exceptional Lidded Redware Jar with Elaborate Manganese X and Slash Decoration, probably Northeastern U.S., early 19th century, diminutive, cylindrical jar with incised wavy banding at midsection, the surface boldly-decorated with brushed manganese X's and slashes, separated by incised and manganese-highlighted banding below the shoulder. Flared rim additionally decorated on interior with manganese slashes. Original lid with tooled banding and brushed manganese drape design. Exceptional size and decoration. Jar with a few small base chips, shallow 1" rim chip, some rim wear, and a few other small rim chips. Glazed surface survives in remarkable condition. Chipping around edge of lid. Loss to knob of lid. H 4 3/8".
