Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with California Railroad Advertising, Midwestern origin, circa 1875, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with the highly unusual slip-trailed cobalt slogan "For the / AC .+. PC. R.R. / California." One of a few examples of American stoneware we have seen with California advertising, and a very rare example of stoneware made specifically for railroad use--in this case, apparently for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. Four short vertical cracks at base, measuring 1/2", 1", 2", and 2 1/2". Otherwise excellent condition. H 10 3/4".
