Rare and Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Reclining Deer Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jar with applied lug handles and flaring, semi-rounded rim, decorated with an artistically-slip-trailed design of a spotted deer reclining on a hill beside a tree stump. Background decorated with a split-rail fence and pine tree. Foreground decorated with a split-rail fence. An excellent example of this desirable Norton motif, featuring vivid cobalt against a light clay background. In-the-firing stone ping near base. Thin 5" spidering line on reverse. Two small, minor worn spots to exterior of rim. Small chip on interior of rim. Typical wear and small chips to ledge on interior of rim where a lid would rest. H 12 1/8".
