Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Unusual Cobalt Floral Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1860, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a two stemmed tulip design including heavily-shaded leaves and dotted tips to the blossoms. This distinctive design is associated with pottery from Rockingham County, VA. It is, therefore, likely that a Virginia-trained potter made this jar. Reverse with two-stemmed floral design. Salt glob to one side. Rough salted texture to much of same side. Base chips. In-the-firing separations on underside. H 17 1/2".
