Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Dated "1865," Western PA origin, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and squared rim, decorated with the brushed cobalt date "1865" with stripe underneath, applied over a light-colored slip. Brushed "2" at shoulder. Desirable Civil War era date. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a Virginia home. Excellent, as-made condition with a shallow glazed-over base chip. H 12 1/2".
