Scarce Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "Hamilton & Jones. / Greensboro. / Greene Co Pa," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, decorated with three stenciled stars, freehand stripes and vining, and a bold stenciled "2" flanked by star-shaped flowers. Unusual and desirable stenciling. Provenance: From a thirty-five year Western PA collection. 9" dark line-shaped discoloration extending from left side, which looks similar to a hairline, but is actually discoloration in the clay. Hairlines on underside, continuing onto base area on reverse. 5 1/2" thin crack from rim on right side of front. Some tiny nicks to shoulder molding. Some fry to a a few brushed cobalt swags. H 12".
