Rare William Henry Harrison Commemorative Redware Bottle, Incised "William Harrison / April 20th / 1840," probably Mid-Atlantic origin, with bulbous body and narrow neck ending in a rounded spout molding, the midsection decorated with tooled banding and incised wavy lines. Surface covered in a rust-colored lead and manganese glaze. Incised on underside "William Harrison / April 20th / 1840" to commemorate the "Log Cabin & Hard Cider Campaign" of General Harrison, whose supporters took a derisive comment, made by an opponent attempting to paint Harrison as a bumpkin, and wore it as a badge of honor. Probably made with the consumption of hard cider in mind. Harrison became the 9th President of the U.S. but died thirty-two days into his term, having the shortest tenure of any U.S. president. A rare example of politically-themed American redware. Excellent condition with a small spout chip and minor spout wear. H 6 5/8".
