Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird Holding Grapes Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, semi-ovoid jug with squared spout and applied strap handle, decorated with cobalt bird with long-tailed and well-detail wing, perched on a heavily-shaded tree stump, and holding a cluster of grapes in its mouth. A highly unusual combination of two popular Cowden & Wilcox motifs: the bird and the grape cluster. Two base chips, one measuring 1 1/2" and the other measuring 1 1/4". Both of these chips may have occurred when the jug was originally removed from the kiln. A third small base chip. 2" hairline on underside, extending 3" up front of jug. H 15 1/2".
