Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1870, large-sized, straight-sided jar with rounded shoulder and applied handles, decorated on the front with a crescent-shaped garland of leaves surrounding the profile of a long-nosed human face. Maker"s and capacity marks and handle terminals highlighted in cobalt. One of Cowden & Wilcox"s most admired decorations. Excellent condition. A few areas of leaf decoration where the cobalt burned off during the firing, which does not affect the face itself. Rim chips.
