Rare Stoneware Flask with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, Inscribed Twice "1820," possibly Southern or Midwestern U.S. origin, 1820, ovoid form with flattened sides, footed base, semi-rounded mouth, and heavily-tooled treatment to the shoulder and neck, brush-decorated with cobalt highlights and swags to the neck, shoulder, and body. Body of flask inscribed with the large date, "1820," in brushed cobalt slip, applied in an inverted orientation and again in a vertical orientation, the second date culminating in a "0" on the flask's underside. Rare form with wonderful potting, folky brushwork, and early date. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 7 1/2".
