Extremely Rare Handled Redware Jar, NC origin, possibly J.C. Cox, Randolph County, late 18th century, thin-walled, rotund jar with heavily tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and thin arched handles with distinctive depressed terminals, the interior coated in a clear lead glaze. Featuring exceptional potting and outstanding form, this jar is the earliest example of North Carolina redware that we have offered that was produced outside of the Moravian and St. Asaph's traditions. A nearly identical jar, described by Southern pottery authority, Carole Wahler, as this example's "twin" was displayed in the 2007 exhibit, Slipped, Dipped, and Dotted: 18th-21st Century NC Redwares, described as "possibly by J.C. Cox / Gray's Chapel, Randolph County." Provenance: Carole Wahler Collection. Some typical surface and rim wear. Interior with residue and some glaze loss. H 11".
