Small-Sized Painted Redware Jar, TN origin, possibly Carter County, TN, circa 1820-1860, rotund jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and ribbed strap handles with depressed terminals, the exterior surface covered in a red-and-gold paint, likely over a lead-based glaze. Interior coated in a clear lead glaze over an orange ground. Exhibited: Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Museum of East Tennessee History, May 16-October 30, 2011. Provenance: Carole Wahler Collection. Very nice condition, although the state of the jar underneath the painted surface remains unknown. Interior with some glaze flakes. An in-the-firing ping to interior base, not visible on exterior. H 6 3/4".
