Glazed Redware Jar, attributed to the Cain Pottery, Sullivan County, TN, circa 1850-1880, highly ovoid jar with footed base, flared rim, combed straight and sine-wave incising to shoulder, and distinctive open, ribbed handles with doubly-depressed terminals. Surface covered in a light lead-and-iron glaze. Outstanding form. In her notes, Wahler states the following about this jar: "Found in Dishner's Valley next to VA line. He said that ' . . . Dishner Valley begins in Wash. Co. VA. And ends in Sullivan Co.' Tn. I believe Marc [King] said the old woman was using it to hold her fireplace poker. Yes 10/13/11." Exhibited: Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Museum of East Tennessee History, May 16-October 30, 2011. Provenance: Carole Wahler Collection. Areas of glaze loss throughout, some of which is restored. Some restoration to foot and some unrestored, shallow chipping to foot. Heavy glaze loss to interior. H 11 1/2".
