Salt-Glazed Stoneware "Railroad and River Guide" Pig Flask, Signed "By Anna Pottery," Wallace and Cornwall Kirkpatrick, Anna, IL, molded flask in the form of a reclining pig with spout at rear, incised details to face and hooves, and anatomically correct underside; incised on one side with the cobalt-highlighted inscription, "St. Louis the future GREAT / Latest and Only reliable / Railroad and River Guide / By Anna Pottery / with a little Good Old Rye in a hogs-. Further incised with a railroad map of the Midwestern U.S. including the following landmarks: Miss River, Chester, Percy, Pinckneyville, Grand tower, murphysboro, Jonesboro, alton, Springfield, Bloomington, O & M.R.R., Odin, Tamaroa, Ashley, Duquoin, Carbondale, C & V.R.R., Vincens, mounds, Cairo, Anna, Cincinnati the Pork City, and Chicag(sic) the Corn City. Surface covered in a clear salt glaze. Two unusual features of this pig are the incised and cobalt-highlighted "razorback" along the spine and the capitalized "GREAT" in "St. Louis the future GREAT." Two in-the-firing contact marks to one side, including two adhered pieces of clay. An in-the-firing contact mark to proper left ear. A loss to tip of proper right ear. Two small carved grooves in the spout may be original or formed some time after use. L 6 1/4".
