Rare Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug with Portsmouth, OH Advertising, attributed to the A.P. Donaghho Pottery, Parkersburg, WV, circa 1880, ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with three diagonally stenciled geometric banners, the first incorporating the number, "4," for four gallons. Base diagonally stenciled "Stanton & Balmert. / Portsmouth. O." Brushed cobalt highlight to upper handle terminal. Desirable size, color, and use of distinctive Donaghho decorative stenciling, featuring Ohio advertising rarely seen by this maker. A 5" lightly depressed, in-the-firing contact mark to jug's proper right side. Other typical, minor in-the-firing contact marks to surface. A salt drip to shoulder. A small spout chip and minor spout nick. An additional small, in-the-firing chip to spout. Some light surface wear. What appears to be a vertical crack at the base is actually only a discolored, glazed-over surface scratch. H 19 1/2".
